Character Information

Character Name: Jacen Solo
Canon: Star Wars Expanded Universe
Canon-Point: after Traitor
Age: Nineteen
History:
Jacen at Wookieepedia!

Personality:

Jacen is the chosen Solo, the wise one. Those other two Solo kids are just the Republic's little workers.

Hm. Jacen Solo. How do I even begin to explain Jacen Solo?
  • Jacen Solo seeks solace
  • He has two different phases of beard, and a pretentious complex
  • They say his hair's insured for 10,000 credits.
  • He lived in a Jedi temple. On Yavin.
  • His favorite lady is a well-muscled redhead
  • One time he met Danni Quee in a rescue pod. And she told him he was pretty.
  • One time, he got Ganner Rhysode killed. Even Ganner Rhysode agreed that it was awesome.
Jacen Solo is the Philosophy Major of people. Here is some actual testimony on Jacen from all his dearest, dearest loved ones (and Kyp):

"Pampered kid" -Anja Gallandro, pre-teen lust of his pre-teen life

"Whenever you're around, something disasterous always happens." -Lando Calrissian, honorary uncle

"You're always off thinking about the next big thing, and the little thing in front of you might eat you up" -Jaina Solo, twin sister

"You're trying to plot a course without knowing where your final destination is" - Anakin Solo, tragically dead younger brother

"I don't know," -Tenel Ka, future baby mama

"Jacen makes a lot of promises, but he only keeps the convenient ones" - Kyp Durron, he killed millions of people and all he got for it was this lousy cape

To understand who Jacen is now, it's first important to look at how he arrived. Jacen's personality, beyond "Solo baby in blue space-onesie", is mostly introduced when he's entering his teenage years at the Jedi academy on Yavin IV. Raised by his uncle Luke, and under the tutelage of Jedi Masters such as Tionne and Kam Solusar, Jacen was instilled with Jedi values and codes at a very young age. The Jedi, above all else, are cemented in the idea that they exist for the protection and benefit of the galaxy, and that Knights are servers of the peace. The Order and duty always come before the ego, and Luke's Order is firmly entrenched in the ideal of pacifism. Luke's ideals were at first heartily embraced by Jacen, cemented by the fact that Luke became his Jedi Master when Jacen entered his apprenticeship.

When he was younger, Jacen held a relatively privileged childhood that was occasionally peppered by wacky hijinks to teach him moral lessons. Growing up the son of two galactic heroes, Jacen understood the obligations of duty, as his parents were out of his life more than they were involved in it, but he also lived in a narrow environment with limited exposure to the less than savory walks of life (kidnappings aside). While he and his siblings, Jaina and Anakin, had their share of struggles (again, kidnappings and parental abandonment), their background enabled them to retain a sense of naivety and almost foolish optimism. As a child, and a young adult, Jacen believed whole-heartedly that good would always triumph over evil, and people would ultimately choose to do the right thing. He was wrong. Because this is the Expanded Universe Star Wars, and here we don't have time for that Ewok party shit up in here.

Before graduating the Praexeum and becoming a full-fledged apprentice, Jacen was defined by his generosity and sense of "humor". More gentle in nature than his twin, Jacen connected more with animals and nature than piloting or mechanics. Empathetic, Jacen was the first to offer someone a second chance (even drug-addicted smugglers who repetitively tried to kill him), or to reach out the hand of friendship (unless you're a rich kid...broken aesops are part of the Jedi Youngling curriculum apparently). He was easily swayed by emotional appeals, and had a sensitivity that gave him an insight into other people that others lacked. Jacen was quick to take the blame in situations as well, such as when Tenel Ka made a shitstick lightsaber that exploded when they were dueling. Jacen would be the first to ease the tension of hostile situations with horrible puns, and he was, above anything else, a cheerful spirit to be around.

But, everything changed when the Vong nation attacked.

By the time the New Jedi Order series is published, Jacen is sixteen, and like all sixteen year olds, is having a bit of an identity crisis. Apprenticed to Luke, out of the protective cocoon of the Yavin IV academy, and stepping into Knighthood, Jacen has simply been exposed to more. As a result, his personality takes its first dramatic shift. While elements of younger Jacen are still apparent, his blind naivety has transformed into a skeptical naivety. Though still remarkably empathetic and observant, Jacen's mental efforts have refocused from the construction of hideous puns to critical inquiry. Reflectively skeptic of his place as a Jedi, and the Jedi's place in the universe, Jacen as an older teenager is more likely to question the legitimacy of the bureaucracy instead of pet his crystal snake. He's conflicted, he's starting to step out of his parents' shadow, and he asks questions without wanting to know the answers: Jacen has transformed from the class clown to the philosophy major who believes his acoustic guitar will kill fascists.

Much of Jacen's identity is anchored in his relationship to his siblings. The opposite of his twin sister Jaina, Jacen is more concerned with the internal applications of being a Jedi. He's the twin to as the hows or whys, to analyze and question, and to debate the ethical nature of the Jedi. Jaina, by contrast, follows orders, blows things up, and does what needs to be done without question. While Jacen loves his sister dearly, and the two share a twin bond, they do not understand each other the way the used to as children. The pair, always on opposite ends of the spectrum, have now experienced divergence as a result of the Yuuzhang Vong war and their responses to it: Jaina joined a fighter squadron to hunt down the Vong; Jacen abstained from the use of the Force as a sign of protest. Jacen had similar opposition with his brother Anakin, who held opposing philosophy to Jacen's own regarding the Jedi's role in the war.

Jacen, before the Mission to Myrkr, was being emotionally, mentally, and ethically pulled in two opposite directions. He questioned the role of the Jedi Order, his place in it, and what it meant to use the Force. His struggle with the dichotomy of light and dark, good and bad, put him at odds with the majority of the other Jedi. Often, Jacen's indecision created major rifts or harmful consequences, such as his abstaining from the Force on Duro until his mother was threatened. The mixture of his inexperience and uncertainty often leads Jacen to making hypocritical decisions, something that leaves his fellow Jedi (notably Anakin, Jaina, Kyp, and occasionally Luke) in exasperation . He was trying to understand the universe, but had no idea what he meant to accomplish with that understanding or even a definite idea of what that understanding meant. Jacen is the type to get lost in the big picture, to the detriment of what's going on around him. As Obi-Wan would no doubt say, he is not mindful of the moment. He is mindful of the future.

Jacen undergoes another notable personality shift with the infamous Mission to Myrkr. The death of his brother, Anakin, and his subsequent imprisonment by the Yuuzhan Vong changes Jacen, and solidifies his philosophic approach to the Force and his own existence. Under physical torture, Jacen shut himself completely off from the Force, severing his Force bond to his twin and being left alone with nothing. Jacen was reduced to a near blank slate, disconnected from everything that he had ever known. From there, with Vergere's guidance, he began to rebuild his identity, come to terms with his brother's death, and figure out what it meant to be a Jedi according to his own terms. Jacen adopted a philosophy of choice and action: he would choose only what was the best course of action for Jacen Solo, without the external baggage of the Jedi ideology.

This new philosophy eliminated his second-guessing nature- instead of being in a state of constant indecision, Jacen learned to trust his instincts, to follow what his own self determined as right or wrong (this would totally not come back to bite him in the ass. Nope, never). It did, however, lead to Jacen believing that right/wrong was entirely subjective, and that it was more important for Jedi to have a deep, personal connection with the Force than for a Jedi to follow the Jedi Code. Jacen returns from his time imprisoned on Coruscant wiser, harder, and more self-confident in himself and his moral codes. Jacen's confidence and assertiveness can often bleed into arrogance, and his philosophical nature can be interpreted as condescension. He is not afraid to stand up for his beliefs, and if his conviction is called into question he hold fast to it. Often this means Jacen can be bullheaded, if not a little selfish in holding to his ideals, but his questioning and reflective nature leads to a broader understanding of the Force than most of his contemporary Jedi.

Abilities/Powers: Jacen is a Jedi Knight, and he has all of the standard Jedi powers. Jacen has a few specialties in regards to his Force powers, most of which were strengthened during his torture and imprisonment by the Yuuzhang Vong on Coruscant:

-Empathy: Jacen has the ability to make empathetic connections through the Force, especially with animals. This can lead to him controlling animals if he chooses to, such as his power over the Vong amphistaffs during his imprisonment, or befriending animals/beasts with ease. His empathetic powers led to the cultivation of a "Vongsense", which allows Jacen to access another plane of the Force and make connections with Yuuzhang Vong (he's the only one that can do this...not that it will really be relevant in game since there is a 0% chance of a Vong being apped)

-Healing: Because of Vergere's "training", Jacen has higher healing capabilities than most Jedi, and can regulate his bodily functions. This manifests the most in Jacen's ability to resist or endure ridiculously high amounts of physical pain

-Mind tricks: Jacen is more adept at mind control or influencing techniques then most Jedi

-Circular Logic: Watch yourself.
